Norwich Military School - NORTHFIELD, Vt. — University President Mark C. Anarumo and Commandant of Cadets, Col. Michael Titus, announced that Matthew Cutting of Niskayuna, New York, has been selected to serve as the 2021-2022 Regimental Commander, the highest ranking cadet in the University Corps of Cadets (NUCC).
Cutting, a Class of 2022 criminal justice major, is under contract with the U.S. Army and serves as the 1st Sergeant for Cadet Training Company in Cadet Corps 1. He has served on the Junior Ring Committee and is a member of Mountain and Weather Company Cold.

"It has thrived through adversity for over 200 years, and it is our duty as senior leaders to ensure that the COVID-19 pandemic does not damage our hallowed tradition of excellence," Cutting said. "The following senior class was the last to experience a 'normal year,' which means we have the unique opportunity to lead in an environment that is almost a 'blank slate,' opening a path for growth in our values and traditions for years for vino. My goal as the next regimental commander is to leave the university better than I found it in all aspects of life here as a cadet and student."

Norwich University - Vermont Military College is a private military college in Northfield, Vermont. It is the oldest private and charter military college in the United States and offers bachelor's and master's degrees on campus and online. The university was founded in 1819 in Norwich, Vermont as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. It is the oldest of six military colleges and is recognized by the United States Department of Defense as the "Birthplace of ROTC" (Reserve Officers' Training Corps).

The university was founded in 1819 in Norwich, Vermont by Captain Ald Partridge, a military educator and former superintendent of West Point. Partridge believed in the "American System of Education", a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his home state of Vermont to found the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Partridge, after founding the academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: an aristocratic and career officer class.
He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent necessity and developed the American system around this idea. His academy inspired a number of military colleges across the nation, including the Citadel. It was also a model for the land grant colleges established by the Morrill Act of 1862.
Today, Norwich offers significant online distance learning programs. It is similar in many ways to Citadel in missions, online offerings, body composition and size.
All first year students who aspire to the Cadet Corps are called "Rooks" and their first year at Norwich is called "Rookdom". The institution of "Rookdom" consists of two three-month processes that mold civilians into Norwich cadets: Rook Basic Training and Basic Leadership Training. The culmination of basic Rook training marks the halfway mark of recognition and occurs before Thanksgiving break, after which Rooks receive privileges. Recognition for acceptance into the Corps of Cadets usually occurs around the eighth week.

Partridge's educational beliefs were considered radical at the time. His views clashed with military officials in the federal government while he was director of West Point. When he established his own academy, he immediately incorporated courses in agriculture and modern languages, in addition to science, liberal arts, and various military subjects. Field exercises, in which Partridge borrowed cannons and muskets from the federal and state governments, supplemented the classroom instruction. They also required students to practice with authentic weapons to support the college's extensive military education program.
Partridge founded 16 other military institutions during his attempt to reform the new US military, including the Virginia Literary, Scientific and Military Academy in Portsmouth, Virginia (1839–1846); Pennsylvania Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy in Bristol, Pennsylvania (1842–1845); Pennsylvania Military Institute in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1845–1848); Wilmington Literary, Scientific and Military Academy in Wilmington, Delaware (1846–1848); Scientific and Military Collegiate Institute in Reading, Pennsylvania (1850–1854); Grammar School and Military Institute in Pembroke, New Hampshire (1850–1853); and the National Military and Scientific Academy at Brandywine Springs, Delaware (1853).
In 1825, the academy moved to Middletown, Connecticut to provide better naval training for the school's Corps of Cadets. Beginning in 1826, the academy offered the first civil engineering course program in the United States.
In 1829, the state of Connecticut refused to grant Captain Partridge a charter, and he moved the school back to Norwich. (The Middletown campus was adapted as Wesleyan College). In 1834, Vermont granted a charter to Partridge and recognized his institution as Norwich University.

During the academic year of 1856, the first chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity was founded by cadets Frederick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Norwich cadets served as instructors for the Northeastern state militias. Tire Class of 1862 enlisted in the US Army upon graduation.
Norwich contained hundreds of officers and soldiers who served in the Federal armies in the American Civil War, including four recipients of the Medal of Honor. One candidate commanded a corps, seven divisions commanded, 21 brigades commanded, 38 regiments commanded, and different candidates served in 131 different regimental organizations. In addition, these m were eyewitnesses to some of the most dramatic events of the war, including the bloodiest day of the conflict at Antietam, the assault on Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and the repulse of Pickett's charge at Gettysburg. Seven hundred and fifty Norwichs served in the Civil War, of whom approximately fifty-six fought for the Confederacy.
Due to the university's high participation rate in the war, the number of students fell: only seven were in the class of 1864.
Confederate raid on St. Albans, Vermont, led to fears that Newport, Vermont would be an imminent target. The Cadet Corps hurriedly boarded an express train for Newport on the same day, October 19, 1864, and were met with great relief by the residents on arrival.

After a disastrous fire in 1866 destroyed the Old South Barracks and Tire Military Academy, the town of Northfield took over the struggling school. The civil war, the fire and the uncertainty as to whether the university would continue negatively affected further studies and new admissions. The school opened in the autumn of 1866 with only 19 pupils. In the 1870s and 1880s, the institution struggled financially, affected by national economic crises. It was named Lewis College in 1880. In 1881 the stud body consisted of only one dose m.
In 1884, the Vermont Legislature changed the school's name to Norwich. In the 1890s, the US Army and Norwich expanded their cooperation. Career Officer Jesse McI. Carter received a two-year appointment as instructor and commanding officer of the cadets. In 1898, the university was designated by the legislature as the Vermont State Military College.
